A little blog about the life of a somewhat lost dreamer....looking for my grace in this crazy world.

So... Eileen had a question...

Y'all know Eileen... she blogs over at The Artful Crafter... she asked what I use for the snow on the houses...

Well Eileen, there are a few options really... all depends on the look you want.  Making lots and lots of ornaments every year, I've tried a great many options.  The two pre-made products I am most familiar with are below... as are my opinions...  (Remember everyone, these are only MY opinions, some of you may have differing thoughts on the products if you have tried them.)

DecoArt (by Americana Paint) makes a product called "Snow-Tex".  I've got a bottle of it, actually I have more than one bottle of it... their description states:  "Creates dimensional effects like snow and stucco on most craft surfaces."  It's not a bad product... sort of like a really thick paint (think, plaster of paris sort of texture, only sorta gel-like).  The Michael's store here sells it for $3.99/ 2 oz.  That really isn't going to ggo very far if you make a large project, or bunches of small houses.

Delta (Ceramcoat) carries a product called Delta Decorative Snow... and I'd love to show you a clear picture from their site, but try as I might, I can find lots and lots of adorable things to create, but not a picture of that specific product, so I can't confirm that they still manufacture it (although, I did see it at Michael's earlier this week).  Now, I've used Delta products since I was a teenager.  My mother used to play in ceramics (molded, not thrown) and Delta makes some very consistent product for that sort of thing... and I love Ceramcoat paints... That being said, the Decorative Snow product sucks.  It's got huge grains in it, almost remind me of tapioca. It would work on large projects, but not small ones... the texture is just too big.

Apparently they also make a "Tub O Snow" as well... it's a 16 ounce tub, and may not be the same product I have... might be worth a try.

Now, what I use...  I use a product made by Liquitex Basics... coarse texture gel.  I bought this somewhere along the way to use on something completely different... I don't even remember what for now, but I know I was disappointed in how it worked for that product... but...

Oh, my goodness, do I love it for snow!  Especially on small projects.  It's a very "sandy" sort of texture suspended in a thick gel.  If you use it alone, it will dry semi opaque... but add some white paint to it and you have the "perfect"  snow.  It spreads well, and it swirls and drifts wonderfully... and when it's dry, it is very sturdy.  I should add here that Liquitex has not comped me product or paid me for my opinion...

Unfortunately, when looking to find a link for this exact product... there don't seem to be any.  They do have a tub of "Resin Sand" that looks to be pretty much the same thing. At the rate I'm going, I'll be able to let you know soon... I have a village growing that I'll be sharing with you guys this week... so be sure to come back to see!

Eileen, I hope that shed a little light on the subject... as for the rest of you, please, if you have questions, be sure to ask... the interaction is what keeps me blogging you know...

OMGosh, thank you for the in depth answer, June.

I was excited to read your product choice because I have a tube in my stash. So I dashed away to check it out ... and mine is Country Red. Don't know what I had in mind when I bought that!

It took me a while to see this post because - like you - I've had some serious computer problems recently ;-)

All better now.
